The Okavango Delta Is Flooding

The Okavango Delta is experiencing a larger than usual flood this season due to the "left over" water from last year, the good rains in the Angola Catchment Area and the good local rains that fell late in April and May.

This natural and cyclical phenomenon affects all areas on the Delta in some way or other. Some areas will be wetter than others but overall this is fantastic for the Delta as it means that large grassland areas and floodplains will be rejuvenated and wide ranging habitats are created for many waterfowl and mammal species.

This very special occurrence is a massive biodiversity covering an area of over 20 000 square kilometers and you will be able to share in this amazing period in the Northern Botswana region.

The high levels of water in the Delta can hamper game drives but at the water and land combination camps it means Mokoro activities are now far more wide spread and offer a real opportunity for encountering game in the shallow floodplains.

The situation is closely monitored by the Lodges in the area and solutions being found for any difficulties experienced such as bridges over soggy paths, adjusting road networks, adapting activities accordingly, etc.

Some camps are surrounded by the Okavango Delta waterways and shaded by the riverside forest offering a variety of Fauna and Flora allowing Chitabe to live up to its promise of spectacular wildlife sightings including big herds of Buffalo, Elephant, Giraffe and Zebra.

The Wildside Safari Club offers a variety of trips to the Delta at different times of the year to capitalize on the Wildlife viewing opportunities. Contact us for more information.

Annual Wildebeest Migration

"The Migration is a natural annual occurrence. Months and years might differ"

On the infinite Plains of the Serengeti during January and March every year an estimated 400 000 Wildebeest calves are born. To the newborn this is the only beginning of its lifelong journey, The Migration.

With more than 1.4 million Wildebeest and 200 000 Zebra and Gazelle a clockwise journey of 1 800 miles to the Masai Mara in Kenya starts in constant search for food and water.

During May The Migration crosses the Grumeti River into the Grumeti Reserve. This is the annual feast the Grumeti Crocodiles were waiting for. This is also a good time to be in the Serengeti because of the start of the dry season.

The Grumeti River Camps Serengeti Mobile Camps, Tanzania Under Canvas and Faru Faru River Lodges offer spectacular views of The Migration this time of the year.

During June the search for greener pastures leads The Migration North East through the Grumeti Game Reserve towards the Ikorongo Game Controlled Area and the Lobo Area as the Serengeti is getting drier.

The Wildside Safari Club specializes in trips to experience the annual Migration. Contact us for our scheduled itineraries or to find out about our next presentation.
